The autocratic leader is facing extinction and a new breed of leader is called for, with a broader repertoire of management styles. The new leaders need to be able to build the confidence and capability of those who report to them. Contemporary leadership theory as well as practice insists that the basis of leadership is self-awareness. Excellent leaders know that they need to develop self-awareness as well as other aspects of emotional intelligence.
